What is Mycelium?

Mycelium is the network of underground fungi that sustains forests. It has been around for thousands of years and will continue to do so for years to come. Mycelia are the invisible link between plants and animals, providing the oxygen, nutrients, and water that they need to thrive. A network of hyphae consists of branching hyphae behind leading hyphae.

This system allows the mycelium to explore a large area and cannibalize the inner mycelium. This inner mycelium is then shut off from the growing area and allowed to decay. During this process, the mycelium will grow into an expanding ring or disk.

A network of hyphae consists of branching hyphae behind leading hyphae. This system allows the mycelium to explore a large area and cannibalize the inner mycelium. This inner mycelium is then shut off from the growing area and allowed to decay. During this process, the mycelium will grow into an expanding ring or disk.

The mycelium contains a number of hyphae. Each of these hyphae can branch out and colonise new wood. Similarly, a single hypha can colonise only a small section of wood, leading to a circular mycelium. The spores germinate in the field and produce early branches and hyphae. These hyphae continue to grow until they reach the desired size. The diagram below shows the growth of a mushroom spore with germ tubes and branchings.

As the mycelium grows, the hyphae will begin to grow. They will start to branch off and continue to grow in a branched fashion. In areas of low nutrient, hyphae will grow quickly without branching. This means that the bulk of the mycelium will be made up of bundles of hyphae. These bundles may have no distinct function, while others will be more defined and have a marked differentiation in nature.
